Since 1997 Steve (and sometimes Marion) makes frequent trips to schools in the United States, Thailand and China.
GRADES: K to 8
AUDIENCE SIZE:
60 to 100 is best. Larger groups are ok.
ASSEMBLIES:
There are two exciting programs; one for K - 2 (30
minutes) and one for
3 - 8 (50 minutes). As the illustrations are projected,
participants have an unusual experience of Australia. Students find animals
and hidden things in the pictures. They view original artwork, drafts,
and items from the resource file. The writing process comes alive.
Real magic is in the alternative answers to riddles that emerge from student
responses. Their immediate lateral thinking and creativity is exciting.
WORKSHOPS (30 minutes):
Riddle Writing: Using a three-step process, participants
create riddles and present them to the group to unlock.
Draw Aussie Animals: In directed drawing, students capture Australian
animals on paper.
FAMILY EVENINGS:
The program is adapted for an all-age group.
TEACHER EVENTS:
Practical workshops, including the above program, extend
the resources within Steve's books, providing teachers with material
for immediate use.
A WORD FROM STEVE ISHAM:
"I love to see students create as they play with words. Along the way we encounter Australia
and its amazing creatures. They sense the magic of words and pictures working together. I
want students to leave the author program empowered to write. The other side, of course,
is picking up a sense of the challenging work that books represent and the constant need
for reworking images and text."
